A well-fitted bra changes everything
A poor fit can cause back and shoulder pain and affect your posture. With this guide from Boutique Canicule, discover your true size and finally wear the lingerie that's right for you — with comfort, support and elegance.
What you'll need before you start
A tape measure
A soft sewing tape — not a rigid ruler.
A mirror
To make sure the tape stays level.
A thin bra
Or measure directly on your skin for greater accuracy.
Pen & paper
To jot down your two key measurements.
4 steps to find your size
-
Take your band (underbust) measurement
Place the tape measure directly under your bust, all the way around your ribcage. The tape should be perfectly level, neither too tight nor too loose — you should be able to slip two fingers underneath. Note this measurement in centimetres.
Tip:If you get an odd number (e.g. 83 cm), round to the nearest even number. This measurement gives you your band size: 80, 85, 90, 95…
-
Take your bust measurement (at the fullest point)
Wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your bust, at nipple level. Keep the tape level across your back. Don't compress — let your breasts keep their natural shape.
Tip:Take this measurement standing up, with your arms slightly away from your body. Measure twice to confirm.
-
Calculate your cup size
Subtract your band (underbust) measurement (step 1) from your bust measurement (step 2). The difference gives you your cup size, as shown in the chart below.
Example:96 cm (bust) − 84 cm (underbust) = 12 cm → C cup → Full size: 85C.
-
Check the fit while wearing the bra
Make sure the underwire lies flat against your ribcage, the straps don't dig in, the band sits level across your back, and your breasts are fully contained in the cups without spilling over.
If the fit isn't perfect:Try one cup size up or down. If the 85C feels too snug, try the 85D. If the band feels too loose, try the 80C.

Cup sizes by measurement difference
- ≤ 10 cm AA
- 10–11 cm A
- 12–13 cm B
- 14–15 cm C
- 16–17 cm D
- 18–19 cm E
- 20–21 cm F
- ≥ 22 cm G+
The formula to remember
Bust measurement − Band (underbust) measurement = Difference → Cup
Combine your band size and cup size to get your full bra size.
Example: 85 + C = 85C | 90 + D = 90D
The most common mistakes
-
Pulling the tape too tight
If you compress your bust while measuring, you'll end up with a cup size that's too small. The tape should just skim your skin without pressing in.
-
Tape not level
A tape that rides up at the back throws off both measurements. Use a mirror or ask someone to check from behind.
-
Measuring over thick clothing
A sweater or shirt adds several centimetres. Always measure over a thin bra or directly on your skin.
-
Measuring only once
Take each measurement twice and use the average. Your body can vary slightly depending on the time of day.
-
Forgetting to remeasure after pregnancy
Your bust and ribcage often change after pregnancy or breastfeeding. Take new measurements after any major change.
